ChatGPT now has 200 million weekly active users, according to OpenAI, representing a doubling of the company’s previously reported weekly audience of 100 million in November. A company spokesperson told Engadget that API usage has also doubled since the release of GPT-4o mini in July.
User numbers are not the only significant growth that OpenAI has experienced over the past year. According to reports, CEO Sam Altman informed employees this summer that the company’s annual revenue, which extends the monthly revenue figure over a full year, reached $3.4 billion, up from $1.6 billion at the end of 2023.
Separately from today’s user numbers announcement, The Wall Street Journal reported that Apple, NVIDIA, and Microsoft are in talks to invest in a new funding round for OpenAI. The only detail provided in the report about the size of this funding round is that it will push OpenAI’s valuation to over $100 billion.
